Every year Niramaya celebrates international Women’s Day with various interesting themes and this year it was advocacy of mothers. We celebrated it with mothers of ‘Amarnath School’ children at Chembur as a part of Anemia/Malnutrition Prevention Control Program.
We inaugurated the event with lightning of Diyas by Ms. D’Sousa – a founder and trustee of the school, Ms Patil – a school principal and Ms Nehal Bhatt – a program manager of Niramaya Health Foundation. A prayer song was sung by school children after that. As a part of advocacy, a small talk was given by one of the parent and Dr Vinayak Sonawane – an assistant program manager, Niramaya Health Foundation. He sent across a small but enlightening message – standing up for gender discrimination and it should start from a house first.
After this, various competitions were planned for mothers. We got huge response for the interesting games like Hair-Straw cliping, marbles picking, henna painting, and all time favorite Musical Chair which attracted most of them to participate. Out of our curiosity, they all participated voluntarily with enthusiasm and enjoyed the event. They said we have played games just for ourselves after plenty of years and had tears in their eyes. They requested more of such events and one of our health worker – Ms Triveni consoled and promised the same. Few school children of various grades performed amazing dances on Marathi and Hindi songs.
Last but not the least; we distributed three prizes to winners of each game. Mothers were encouraged to share their experiences of the day. Event was concluded by distribution of mementoes and leaflets as reading material.
